Liberal Party NEC Statement – The Return of Freedom of Movement

The Liberal Part views with grave concern comments by the PM that the UK could embrace freedom of movement as part of a deal to move closer or back into the European Union.

The party does not believe there is any evidence that Britain lost control of immigration by simply ditching freedom of movement. We were arguably at the receiving end of migrants taking advantage of the Schengen Zone and unrestricted travel within the European Union after entry at its boarders.

The European Union has yet to address the issues of unchallenged internal travel by documented and undocumented migrants or the issues of repatriation to their home nations.

The Liberal Party believes in a managed immigration policy, giving priority to Commonwealth citizen and using a points based system to ensure we fill skilled vacancies only where UK citizens are unavailable to fill those rolls.
